Don’t react with whatever’s on your mind!

Some time soon you’re bound to have someone say something to you that completely floors you, and you don’t have any idea how to respond in the moment.

Whatever you do, don’t react by saying whatever’s on your mind!

Here’s a technique that anyone can learn.

Buy yourself some time by shifting the focus of attention to the other person.  You can do this by asking questions.  Whilst this is counter-intuitive, it works because it reboots your brain into the neo cortex (your rational thinking) part of your brain.

Divert the spotlight away from yourself by asking the other person questions (get curious not furious!) or you can summarise what they’re saying to check you’ve correctly understood their message.

Aim to find out as much as you can and while this is happening you ‘ll be composing yourself and becoming less reactive.

Discover more about this technique (and many others) at one of my Courageous Conversations workshops – effective and instant results guaranteed!  As an additional taster of my workshop, download my 7-day free e-learning course.
